There has never been a better opportunity to progress telehealth and telecare in Scotland. As the health service seeks innovative solutions to help it meet the challenges of an ageing and geographically dispersed population and a growing number of people living with long term conditions, telehealthcare products and services will play an increasingly pivotal role. A recent review of telehealth in Scotland conducted by public spending watchdog Audit Scotland sounded an important note of confidence for the potential of telehealth to improve the quality, delivery and efficiency of a range of clinical services. Where is has been used, patients, doctors and nurses generally responded positively, the report observed, with benefits for patients including reduced travel, quicker diagnosis and avoiding hospital admissions. However, it noted that while NHS boards are making use of telehealth, development and investment in this area has not been seen as a priority and so concluded that the health service should do more to consider such technologies when introducing or redesigning services.
